my sister rolled her Subaru Forester the other day… all is fine… (damage pics enclosed)

October 29th, 2007 by bryan

the damage is less than I thought it would be in all honesty… evidently she was driving westbound, cruise set at 70mph, in the fast lane… somehow ended up driving into the center median, then bounced back into the westbound lane, facing eastbound, on the wheels.

at some point in time the car skidded/rolled on the concrete (as evident by the fenders, a pillars, etc) and she obviously nailed the passenger rear corner into the grass hard…

My hypothesis is she drifted to the center median, when the tire dropped off, it hooked, she spun around, slammed the rear passenger side into the grass median (as evident by the large amount of damage on the rear corner, and the dirt in the window track, etc), then she must have rolled or skidded or something back onto the street… Not sure. She remembers spinning around both clockwise and counter-clockwise…

But I can’t tell… but overall… the passenger compartment really did quite well… the seats still all moved, the rear seats folded down, the doors opened. they didn’t try to open the tailgate…

they are already working the purchase of another forester…

she is sore, bruised rib, needs some time to rest … but she should be fine…

movie review: Lars and the Real Girl

October 28th, 2007 by bryan

So we saw Lars and the Real Girl last night… It was actually pretty good… We had seen a segment on HBO’s Real Sex a few years ago about the company that makes the Real Dolls, and it was honestly kinda crazy. The movie follows this dude who has social issues, and one day he starts toting this doll around as if she is a real person that can talk and whatnot. So all the people around him actually play along with it. I enjoyed it. Obviously not a ‘big screen required’ kinda movie… but it was enjoyable. I would recommend it.

Side note… I hate it when websites don’t use title and meta tags correctly… for example… google the title… the top 3 include the IMDB page, the trailer on apple.com, and then the ‘official’ site… which has a title of ‘Lars and the Real Girl - Coming Soon’ … which is dumb, since the movie is already released, and the site itself acknowledges that. Then the lack of meta tags on the page combined with the fact that the page is entirely flash means there is actually NOTHING to show on the google description. Seriously, really?

Our thai restaurant is open!

October 25th, 2007 by bryan

Our preferred thai delivery place, Pot Pan used to be located on north avenue, but the building was getting torn down for condos, so they moved over to Milwaukee ave. They are actually CLOSER than they used to be to us, which is great (and surprising, since they were only 3 blocks away before, now they are barely 2 blocks. Even from the old location, most of the time they would deliver it on foot.)

They actually have been closed 5 months due in part to the move and in part to the cities 3 month delay in finishing their paperwork. In the meantime, we ordered thai from a few other places, and while they were good, we both have this whole “omg pot pan ruled” thing in our head… so I called tonight (as I have been doing every week) and I was happy to find them open again… They were very happy to be open and the woman referred to us as ‘our old customer’… so that was nice. Hopefully our memory is accurate and Pot Pan really is as good as we recall.

harper hit me with this video. It must be so awesome, but I don’t have the balls. Or I have too much self preservation. Kind of a fine line.

We are now a family of 4.

daily…

August 18th, 2007 by bryan

So, if you are following over at the baby blog, we are sitting around the house waiting for a baby. And rebecca was watching gymnastics, and it ended. The Singing Bee has come on, and man, this show is lame.

I really don’t watch any of these ‘talent reality shows’. And I realize it is cyclic, and we are in the part of the cycle where people care about these shows. America’s Got Talent, Singing Bee, So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, etc etc etc are all popular, and I realize that people love them, but man, they are annoying. It doesn’t help that many of them take more than one time slot a week.

I for one welcome the return of normal shows. I am sure it will happen in a few years when people get around to boredom.

Poor Management…

August 4th, 2007 by bryan

So time has passed since I was laid off, and with that I have had more time to reflect on the entire situation, and the more I reflect, the more frustrated I get. As you will recall, my coworker and I were both laid off at 4pm on tuesday, with that very tuesday being our last day. The speech was of course that times were tight and the company had to tighten the belt financially, and due to this, my position was no longer. And, of course, the company was in no financial position to offer me anything above and beyond what I was legally entitled.

Evidently the company is in financial trouble.

Effective Immediately….

August 1st, 2007 by bryan

When I worked at a previous consulting firm, first job out of college, back in the day… we all used outlook and exchange… so when you would be sitting there, at your desk, and an email would go out to all the people in the company, you would hear the ‘new mail beep’ chime out across the room, all at once.

When someone was fired/laid off (mostly almost always fired) an email would come across to everyone… the person’s name would be the subject line, and the body would have the phrase “Effectively immediately is no longer employed by ABC Consulting”. I swear he had that as a template saved and ready to rock.

Cell phones… nokia and iPhone…

July 17th, 2007 by bryan

I love nokia phones. I really like the symbian OS too. I think I just like the concept of an OS where I can install apps and whatnot and do whatever. Oh, and it isn’t an MS OS, which I won’t do. So I have a nokia. My wife has a nokia. My kid has my on of our old nokias as a toy. My mom has one. My sister has one. I tell everyone that they need nokias. When people who bought RAZR’s finally get fed up with that piece of crap phone, I tell them to go nokia.

So when the iPhone was announced I was conflicted. I also love apple. But the whole lack of installable software pissed me off to a degree that I knew I wasn’t going actually get one. I took the money and bought car parts and bike parts instead.

As the iPhone hit the market and I got more into it, there was a tinge of desire there I will admit, but then I remembered, while I sat on the can playing solitaire on my nokia, that I could do that on an iPhone, but I would have to be hitting a web page. Meh.

Then I got this link today, and I found it really funny. And really the points are all valid. Sure, it is a bit over the top, it is all valid. And really pretty in line with my feelings and thoughts. Sure, he does better animated GIFs than I do, but I am ok with that.
